Founded in 1911, The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) is the oldest and largest professional safety organization. Its more than 30,000 members manage, supervise and consult on safety, health, and environmental issues in industry, insurance, government and education. ASSE has 13 practice specialties, 150 chapters, 57 sections and 64 student sections.

Several ASSE members from Lee and Collier Counties in Florida met in July 2004 to find a way to meet as ASSE members without the burden of traveling 2-3 hours each way to attend chapter meetings.  As we polled ASSE members in Southwest Florida, we found that many ASSE members desired to meet regularly, but were unable to attend meetings that required excessive travel time.  As a result, we began the task of applying for section status.  Our efforts were rewarded and on 10 March 2005, the Southwest Florida Section of the Florida Suncoast Chapter was officially sanctioned as an ASSE Section by the American Society of Safety Engineers.

July 2006 - UPDATE

Shortly, the ASSE Regional Operating Committee will consider a motion to dissolve the Southwest Florida Section - then, the Section and the Chapter will merge into a cohesive organization with the appointment of the former Section Officers into the leadership positions of the Florida Suncoast Chapter ASSE.  Participation at Chapter meetings in the Bradenton area has dropped off over the past few years while the Section meetings in Lee County have been very well attended.  To address the needs of the members who participate on a monthly basis, therefore, the Chapter's monthly meetings will be held on the 3rd Thursday each month in the Bonita Springs (Lee County) area of the Chapter's geographic responsibility.
